Five Perspectives for Interpreting Energy Flow through Bazi
In the Four Pillars of Destiny (Saju or Bazi), the 12 Phases of Qi (十二運星) don’t merely tell us “what state” a heavenly stem is in.
What’s more important is how to interpret and apply that state meaningfully.
This post introduces five practical methods for applying the 12 Phases of Qi in Saju analysis.
1. Bongbeop (逢法): Day Master–Centered Analysis
📌 Key Concept: Use the Day Master (Il-Gan) to analyze its state across the four branches (Year, Month, Day, Hour).
📍 Where to apply: All four branches of the chart.
Example:
If the Day Master is Byeong (丙 Fire):
- Meets Ja (子) → Tai (胎, Embryo)
- Meets O (午) → Je-Wang (帝旺, Sovereignty)
→ This method is great for checking the personal energy flow of the Day Master.
2. Geobeop (居法): Analyze Each Pillar Individually
📌 Key Concept: Analyze the Heavenly Stem in each pillar (year, month, day, hour) by matching it with its corresponding Earthly Branch.
📍 Best used for: Understanding the structure and dynamics of the whole chart.
Example:
- Year Stem: Gap (甲 Wood) + Year Branch: In (寅) → Jangsaeng (長生, Birth)
- Month Stem: Byeong (丙 Fire) + Month Branch: O (午) → Je-Wang (帝旺, Sovereignty)
3. Injongbeop (引從法): Follow Energy Across Time
📌 Key Concept: Check how a Heavenly Stem interacts with the current Earthly Branch in specific time periods (like 10-year Luck Pillars or Annual Luck).
→ It helps track the evolution of your fate over time.
Example:
- If Byeong (丙 Fire) meets O (午) in the Luck Pillar → Je-Wang (帝旺)
4. Jwabeop (坐法): Analyze the Hidden Stems Inside a Branch
📌 Key Concept: Study the Hidden Stems (Jijiang-Gan) inside a given Earthly Branch.
→ Commonly used in interpreting the Spouse Palace (Day Branch) or Children Palace (Hour Branch).
Example:
- If the Day Branch is In (寅), and it contains Byeong (丙), we analyze the 12-phase state of that Byeong.
5. Energy Matching by Luck Cycle
📌 Key Concept: Check how your natal Heavenly Stem interacts with the Earthly Branch of a given time (Luck or Annual).
→ Used for forecasting and period analysis.
Example:
- During a 10-year Luck Pillar of Jin (辰), Byeong (丙 Fire) → Gwan-Dae (冠帶, Crowning)
- During a year of Sa (巳), Byeong (丙 Fire) → Geon-Nok (乾祿, Prosperity)
✨ Final Thoughts: Different Tools, One Purpose
- Bongbeop focuses on your personal energy state
- Geobeop reveals the energy of each pillar
- Injongbeop follows how energy evolves with time
- Jwabeop explores inner dynamics of relationships
- Luck matching offers a path to forecast the future
Each approach provides a different perspective, but ultimately,
they all help us read one thing:
“The state of Qi – and where you are in its journey.”
So let me ask you:
Which phase of the 12 are you living in right now?
