What is Yin-Yang (陰陽)?

– The Condition of Existence, the Structure of Operation –

1. The Basic Definition of Yin-Yang

Yin-Yang (陰陽) is the most fundamental principle of Eastern philosophy.
All phenomena in the universe are explained through these two opposing yet interdependent energies.

  • Yin (陰): darkness, cold, receptivity, stillness, inwardness, femininity
  • Yang (陽): brightness, heat, expansion, movement, outwardness, masculinity

These two energies oppose each other but also rely on one another.
Neither can exist alone; only through each other do they generate action in the world.

🌱 Yin and Yang form an Interdependent Structure.
Nothing happens on its own—but together, change and interaction begin.

2. Yin-Yang as a Structure of Operation

🌀 Yin-Yang in Thermodynamics

“Energy always flows from a hotter body to a cooler one, and in the process, work is done.”
— The Second Law of Thermodynamics

This law can be applied directly to the principle of Yin-Yang:

ElementSymbolRole
Yang (陽)☀️ Sun, heatThe giver of energy (Give)
Yin (陰)🌍 Earth, coolnessThe receiver of energy (Receive)

☀️ The sun radiates heat,
🌍 The Earth receives it and transforms it into life and change.
In this way, Yin and Yang create reality through a flow of relationship.

3. Yin-Yang as the Mechanism of the Universe

In the cold vastness of space (Yin),
the heat of the sun (Yang) acts as a life-giving source.
Earth, positioned in between, rotates and revolves,
creating day and night, the four seasons, and rhythmic changes.

Thus, Yin-Yang is not a mere symbol,
but a cosmic mechanism and a cycle of life.

4. Yin-Yang Is Not a Thing—It’s a Relationship

Yin cannot be revealed without Yang,
and Yang cannot function without Yin.
Each becomes the condition and background for the other to manifest.

Examples:

  • “Day” exists only because of “night.”
  • “Heat” is recognized only in contrast with “cold.”

💡 Key Summary

“Yin-Yang is the condition of existence and the structure of operation.”
“All life and transformation begin in the flow between the giver and the receiver.”
“Nothing happens alone. The world moves when two forces meet.”
